Today, Johan and I were supposed to go to the Bike for the Fallen Heroes Charity Event. We had stopped by Commerce to check out the action and peep in on Day Two of the LAPC Main Event. As we got into our car to go to the Bike, we decided to meet a friend at Hollywood Park to check out the Pegasus tourney. Right as we pulled up to Hollywood Park, our friend informed us that they took off the guarantee and didn't expect more than 5 tables to run. He talked us into following him to play a tourney at the Hustler.
I picked up A/J early in the BB - and checked hoping to make a few chips - I fired several bullets after flopping my Ace but lost to the limper in mid-position who flopped Aces up. I picked up pocket KKs on the button and reraised after under the gun 3-bet it. I only made about 600 in chips because the SB folded pocket 10s and although the initial raiser said he had an over pair, he couldn't call my all-in after the SB opened his mouth and said, "so does she." Shortly thereafter, I missed a huge draw which left me w/ a little over $2K - and while I'm a great shortstack player - I couldn't rake any chips w/ AA or a set of 3s (w/ 2 callers and a darn A on board). I couldn't even get callers with a 2 1/2 raise off position w/ 9/10. In the end, I could only build my chips back up to just short of the original $5K by the break. After the break (blinds @ 100/200+25) I pick up A/J clubs (I HATE A/J) in late position and 3-bet it. Only seat 8 (in the BB) called - who was a table change and hadn't seen me play one hand. He quickly checked the 8-high flop then insta-called my 2nd bullet, spilling his chips all over the place as he tried to get them to the betting line (hmmm who else thinks the BB called with a middle pair and flopped a set?). Well, I know he put me on highcards and when paint hit the turn, he pushed (hoping, hoping, hoping, I had A/Q). Even if I did have A/Q, I can't "call" his all-in when I know he flopped a set of 8s. I'm patient, and w/ only $1600 in chips and the blinds at $150/300+50 I fold A/2 suited under the gun in a hand that ended up w/ seat 8 all in w/ KKs vs. seat 7 who limped in mid-position w/ AAs. So the guy that took 1300 off my already shortstack, got knocked out (ug) two hands later. The very next hand I picked-up A/10 on the BB and in I go with my last 1500...and am knocked out with my own chips because Seat 7 picked-up A/K. As I look up, I see Johan...knocked out at the same time. I guess it just was not our day.
On a side note, I played against a person who recognized me from a poker forum. It was nice to be recognized but we couldn't talk at the table and I'm afraid that something he said might have contributed to my inability to rake any chips. But, that's poker!
